n recent years, there have been a growing number of people that want to remove themselves from the western way of consumerism and the mentality of “bigger is better”. These people want to downsize to live more simply thus they’ve taken the plunge and sold their house and moved into a tiny room like house referred to as a tiny home. Tiny homes are mobile houses typically under 500sq ft, they are usually made out of refurbished material and quite often “off the grid”. They can come and go from different locations with ease and can surprisingly be very comfortable to live in.
If everyone on Earth were to live as the average Canadian did, we would need a total of 3.8 Earth’s just to sustain our level of needs and consumption with the current population. Tiny homes are one solution to this pressing issue! Tiny homes have the unique option to live off the grid easier than if one where to live in a normal sized house. To live “off the grid” means to get water, heat and electricity entirely through the environment around you. Whether it be through solar panels or wind power, filtration systems and rain water collection systems or other environmentally friendly ways to conserve the planets natural and abundant resources. Even if the home is connected to the grid, it is such a small space that the electricity is hardly comparable to that of the average house in Canada.
Tiny homes require much less material to build as well. With the average tiny home ranging between 500-800sq ft, there is less material needed to construct the house as well as the inside of the home has less room for unnecessary things. Thus every single part of the house has to be both functional and practical. The smaller living area deters people from buying useless or unnecessary items for their home, cutting down on consumption and in the long term waste!
Tiny homes give us the opportunity to live a simpler life. I life of freedom to roam as we please and a life where we are not tied to any particular location or lifestyle. The world is at a tipping point, where depending on our choices, over consumption could completely deplete the planet or we could turn it around and live in a more equal world where people do not live beyond the means of the planet. To down size and to live a life of minimalism is a life that is working towards the option of an equal world, and equal opportunities. To some, it may just be the choice of where to live, but in the grand scheme of things, tiny house living is the choice towards a sustainable life.
