The first step to buying coffee zero waste is to make it at home! In our house we use an Aeropress coffee maker, and we love it. It makes delicious coffee, and we use less coffee than we did with our big coffee pot. When we are making coffee for more than just the two of us (the Aeorpress makes one cup at a time), we use the coffee pot I’ve had since I was 18 years old. The Aeropress came with a bunch of paper filters, but once we use them up we are going to buy reusable filters.
If you can’t make coffee for yourself at home, that’s ok, it is still possible to buy coffee zero waste! Make sure you always have your thermos or reusable mug on you, or if you don’t, get a mug at your favourite coffee shop and sit down and enjoy it there! If I forget my thermos, and don’t have the time to sit down, I wait until I have time – for me, not creating unnecessary waste is very important, and I can’t justify getting a disposable cup.
We buy our coffee grounds to make at home zero waste as well! We take a big jar (it can fit one pound of coffee) to our favourite coffee shop – Java Blend in Halifax. We get them to fill it up with the freshly ground coffee. They weigh the jar first so we are getting the full pound of coffee, and are always happy to give us our coffee zero waste.
