Every Christmas, my family decorates a gingerbread house with our neighbour’s three kids. It’s a fun way to spend the afternoon, and we all eat tons of candy. We’ve been doing this for years now, and it’s one of my favourite parts about coming home around the holidays.
My mom makes homemade gingerbread the night before, and my dad helps to assemble it before the kids come. We buy candy in bulk, and this year we went to BulkBarn. They have recently started up a pilot project at a few of their downtown Toronto locations where you can bring your own containers! We used zero plastic bags at bulk barn, and this was almost waste free – we used some tinfoil that the gingerbread house sat on, and some wax paper when rolling the dough.
BulkBarn made it so easy to shop waste free! When you go to the store with your own containers, you take them to the cash register where they weigh them for you, and put a little sticker on it. Then you fill up your jars and pay at the cash – it was so easy. I talked to the man working at the cash register and asked him if lots of people were bringing their own containers in. He said that it hasn’t become popular yet, but hopefully it will – all the people working at the cash register thanked us for bringing in our own jars. It seemed like a lot of people in the store didn’t know that you could even bring in your own jars (even though they had huge signs all over the store advertising it).
So people of Toronto, PLEASE shop at the downtown BulkBarn locations, and bring your reusable containers! This is a pilot project, and if it is successful, it will be carried into other stores.
Are there any other bulk stores you shop at that let you bring your own containers? I would love to hear about them!
