Every year 8.8 million tonnes of plastic to marine environments on a yearly basis – that is an INSANE amount of plastic. It is estimated that 60% of the worlds plastic pollution comes from Asia, and if things don’t change, Asia’s plastic pollution is expected to rise.
India’s National Green Tribunal recently voted to ban all disposable plastics on January 1, 2017 in India’s capital, Delhi. They have also imposed the equivalent of a $150 fine for any food producers found littering.
In a society that feels like it revolves around plastic, this is a huge step – hopefully it will inspire other cities and areas to do the same, not just in Asia but worldwide.
