By now, everyone should know that plastic bags are terrible for the environment. Single-use bags can cause severe damage to the environment, as well as harm wildlife by suffocating them, or by the animal ingesting them. There are many cities and countries banning plastic bags, and now we can add Newport, RI to the list!
Newport has just become the second city in Rhode Island to ban single-use plastic bags at checkout counters, and the ban will go into effect November 1, 2017. Customers will have to bring their own reusable bags when they go shopping – this is an easy thing to do, once you make a habit of it.
I think it is such a positive sign that more and more cities and countries are working together to stand up for the environment and ban plastic bags. As a society we have gotten so lazy, and accustomed to these disposable items, and this is a positive step away from the ‘disposable’ society.
