In many countries, the use of animals – like Elephants – for entertainment purposes has been prohibited and this is the same in Brazil. The problem is that even though the law says they can’t be used for entertainment, there was no sanctuary in Latin America that was able to take care of these animals. The animals were being sent to the zoo or to some farm on the countryside, which did not have the proper facilities to take care of animals.
Researchers say that there are 5 thousand elephants in risk in the world, 30 of them in Brazil. The international group ElephantVoices in partnership with the Global Sanctuary for elephants decided to create an Elephant sanctuary in Brazil.
The objective of the sanctuary is to mimic their natural environment – that stimulates the elephant physically and creates a social dynamic environment, were they can express their natural behaviour and learn from each other. So not only do they rescue the elephants, but they also rehabilitate the animals.
They also promote environmental education, studies and scientific research on the field of Elephant Welfare.
