Recently CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) has included four species of sharks and nice species of rays to be protected. This is in hopes that their depleted populations can recover – these species have declined more than 70% due to the trade in fins and gill plates. And what’s even more awesome is there was a record amount of support for this proposal!
This is an amazing and important step in ensuring that populations of sharks and rays don’t further depleted. Every member of ecosystems plays a vital role, and every species deserves protection.
