I’m sure you’ve seen it in the news: the Great Barrier Reef isn’t doing so well. A while ago there was an obituary circulating the internet for the Great Barrier – I did not read it.
This Guardian article written by Oliver Milman is the first article that I have read about it recently. Why? Because it doesn’t portray the doom and gloom narrative. In fact, articles like the “Obituary of the Great Barrier Reef” may actually do more harm than good. If the Great Barrier Reef is already dead, why bother to do something about it? If the story was that a lot of the reef has been harmed, but it’s not all gone yet, so lets keep talking about it, and doing something to help, I think there would be a lot more action taken.
While a disastrous bleaching event has occurred, reefs throughout the world have shown enormous resilience to distress, and we should not give up hope.
