The Ross Sea, located in Antarctica, is one of the most pristine ecosystems in the world. (For a great documentary outlining the Ross Sea, and the issues it faces, watch The Last Ocean). The Ross Sea is a very biodiverse ecosystem, and is home to many unique animals that aren’t found anywhere else in the world.
For years, Mission Blue has been working hard to get the Ross Sea protected, and now it looks like it will happen! There are plans to create a 1.55 million km2 area in the Ross Sea that will be protected. Currently it is a 35 year commitment to restrict activity in the area, but Mission Blue is confident that the benefits of this MPA will become very apparent and countries will then create a long term MPA.
This is an amazing success story for all the amazing animals that live there!
Mission Blue is working hard to create “Hope Spots” – areas in the ocean that are that are vital to the health of the oceans and that therefore need to be protected. You are able to nominate an area that you think should be designated as a Hope Spot!
