THINX was created by women and their aim is to break down period taboos. They do outreach work in developing nations by providing young girls with reusable pads, and created “period proof underwear.” Period proof underwear absorb the blood, are antibacterial, and leak resistant (I personally don’t own a pair but am definitely intrigued). THINX’s site claims that while you are wearing the underwear, you feel dry, and they don’t feel awkward like wearing a pad (or diaper) might – also, the underwear look awesome.
They have a chart that shows how much blood each underwear can hold. They don’t use volume of blood, but instead use how many tampons worth of blood they can hold.
A super neat idea, and I am considering buying a pair to try out. Actually as I write this I really wish I had one – I got an IUD in yesterday, with that comes spotting and you’re not supposed to use tampons or menstruation cups for a week after the insertion.
But what I am here today to talk about is one of their most recent innovations. Something they have been working on for two years…. REUSABLE TAMPON APPLICATORS. How has no one thought of this before!!! If you’ve ever strolled down the beach and have looked at the ground, I’m sure you’ve seen a tampon applicator washed ashore – not good for the environment. Especially when you consider that every (healthy) woman has a period for a good chunk of her life once a month.
The applicator they created is made from silicone, the same material as the Diva cups or other menstrual cups. They are also selling cotton tampons that go in their reusable applicator. You just wash the applicator after you use it and it’s ready for when you need to change your tampon next. So simple, I love it. Watch the short two minute video announcing THINX’s reusable tampon applicator here.
And definitely watch this video about how they came to be, how they give back to communities, and all about period taboos. Watch the video!!!!!!!!
