“Think outside the bulk bins! How many of you have access to the majority of your food via bulk bins?

I'm going to guess not very many of you?

Living in Northern California, I have access to some pretty awesome package free options, but I'm from Arkansas and know what it's like to live in a town with only a Walmart.

I sometimes think too much pressure is put on the perfect zero-waste grocery haul.

Because there are so many ways to shop for food more sustainably that have absolutely NOTHING to do with packaging.

1. The first thing you should do is load up on fruit and veg! Have a goal of making 80% of your plate produce. Animal products are a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions. If you're not a plant-based eater, make a goal of trying out a few new dishes. If you need some inspo, let me know in the comments. I can link to a few of my go-to recipes in stories!

2. Avoid overly processed and overly packaged snacks. Many popular snacks like oreos and ritz crackers contain palm oil from unsustainably managed farms that are responsible for the destruction of much of rainforest eco-system.

3. Don't buy any single-use items. Even if you need to buy something in a package (most of us do!) don't buy the single-serve items, buy a larger item and decant it into a reusable single-serving container.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more ways to grocery shop more sustainable. Let me know if you're interested in a part 2? And, what would you add to the list?

  • Ah, sphagnum - my favourite moss! Not only is it beautiful, soft, and
colourful, it’s also an incredibly important species for combating climate change. Sphagnum moss creates an acidic environment that prevents decomposition, and over time as more sphagnum grows, old sphagnum, also known as peat, accumulates to create peatlands.

Did you know that PEATLANDS are the largest terrestrial carbon store in the
world? They store over ONE THIRD of the world’s carbon - and they occur in
every country. When damaged, they release a vast amount of carbon into the atmosphere (much like deforestation). They’re among the most valuable ecosystems on the planet, and their protection is critical for combatting climate change. Protect our peatlands!

  • Zero waste snacks! I made this granola from scratch with ingredients I got from the bulk store, aka no waste!! Making your own snacks not only saves a plastic wrapper or bag, but you know it’s healthy and that no sneaky ingredients were added😇
What are your favourite zero waste snacks to make?
